Passage 1
Scenic spots on notice
Traveling has always been a good way to relax. But this is not true for Xiao Lin.
In 2016, Xiao Lin took a trip to Lijiang, a tourist city in Yunnan province, and had dinner at a restaurant. She had an argument with a group of local people because they made a joke about her while she was eating. Later, they beat her and severely injured her face, according to CCTV.
In fact, Xiao Lin is not the first person to be injured at a famous scenic spot (景区) in China. The National Tourism Administration (国家旅游局)gave serious warnings to three national 5A scenic spots. It also asked them to change and improve within six months.
The three spots are the Old Town of Lijiang, Jingpo Lake in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang, and Laohutan Ocean Park in Dalian, Liaoning. They failed to meet the standards of 5A scenic spots, including those concerning transportation, safety, and sanitation (卫生状况). According to People’s Daily, these three spots received the most complaints from visitors during this year’s Spring Festival holiday.
“We’re sorry for our poor work,” the Old Town of Lijiang government wrote on its Sina Weibo account. “We are open to tourists’ suggestions and will make things right.”
If the three spots don’t correct themselves within six months, the National Tourism Administration will remove them from the 5A scenic spot list, Guangming Daily reported.
“I’m glad to hear that the spots will improve themselves,” said one Sina Weibo user who also had a bad experience at Lijiang. “I hope they will improve.”

Passage 2
Where did you go this summer vacation? Did you visit a famous university in China or another country? Many Chinese students have done so in order to learn more about these schools.
This summer, crowds of tourists from across the country traveled to famous universities like Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University. Tsinghua University, for example, received 6,000 visitors a day, China Youth Daily reported. Most of them were students who were traveling with their parents.
With the rising number of visitors, it took many hours to enter the universities.
“Tsinghua University opens to the public at 8:30 am,” a guard (保安) told China Youth Daily. “However, many people start to line up (排队) at 3 to 4 am because people who come at 6 o’clock may be too late and can only enter in the afternoon.”
This is not only for Chinese universities. Oxford in Britain and Harvard in the United States are facing the same problem. In the summer, the bicycle paths of Oxford are full of tour buses, which are often parked illegally (违规), according to The Independent. The sidewalks (人行道) are also full of Chinese tourists.
“University tourism” is popular because of the long histories and unique cultures of these famous universities. More importantly, many parents hope their children will go to a top university in the future, People’s Daily noted.

3. What does “unique” in the last paragraph mean?
A. usual B. special C. common D. various

A. The popularity of “university tourism” and why it is a problem.
B. The influence of “university tourism”.
C. A description of “university tourism”.
D. The advantages and disadvantages of “university tourism”.
Passage 3
Pick a unique holiday spot
Do you have plans to travel? Maybe you just like dreaming of faraway countries that you have seen on television or in a magazine? Whatever your reasons, there are plenty of choices when it comes to choosing a country to visit in 2017. Rather than picking obvious destinations (目的地) like the United States or Australia, here are two exciting countries selected by the Lonely Planet and Awol Junkee that offer different but amazing experiences.
Ethiopia 埃塞俄比亚
Go on safari (狩猎旅行) in this African nation, exploring the Simien Mountains to find beautiful animals everywhere. Ethiopia has its own language, food, coffee, and even a 13-month calendar (日历), according to Lonely Planet. You can visit a church carved (雕刻) into the side of a cliff (悬崖) in the city of Tigray, or ride a boat on Lake Tana. If you want to see a unique part of Africa, this is a good choice. More airlines are flying to Ethiopia in 2017, making it easier for people to visit and enjoy the sunshine.
Montenegro 黑山
Croatia (克罗地亚) has always been a popular beach holiday destination. But travel writers are saying Montenegro is the “next Croatia”. This European wonder boasts (以……为荣) beautiful seafood and great restaurants. The cliff top view and pebbled beaches are great places to rest and relax. You can hike into deep canyons (峡谷) or spy majestic flamingos (火烈鸟) in the wetlands. “Go for the Mediterranean (地中海的) holiday you’ve been craving (渴望), without the price tag,” travel writer Kate McCabe told Awol Junkee.
